Furniture Assembly: Why Professional Help Saves Time, Frustration, and Injuries

You've just moved in. The space is yours. The boxes are unpacked. And then you look at the stack of flat-pack boxes in the corner — the bed frame, the wardrobe, the desk, the bookshelf — and the feeling of accomplishment quietly evaporates.

Furniture assembly is one of those tasks that sounds straightforward and rarely is. At FreshMove, we handle it every day — here's what you need to know.

Why Flat-Pack Assembly Is Harder Than It Looks

Manufacturers design flat-pack furniture to be assembled by the average person with basic tools. In theory. In practice:

  • Instructions are often poorly translated or use diagrams that leave out critical details
  • Hardware is easily confused — the difference between a cam bolt and a cam lock can mean an hour of rework
  • Particle board is unforgiving — stripped screw holes, over-tightened cams, and split panels are permanent
  • Some pieces require two people — holding a panel in place while inserting dowels is physically impossible alone
  • "Some assembly required" sometimes means six hours and a YouTube tutorial

The furniture itself is often fine. The assembly process is where things go wrong.

What Our Assembly Service Covers

Our team assembles all major brands and types of ready-to-assemble furniture:

IKEA

IKEA is the most common assembly request we receive. We've assembled every product in their catalogue — PAX wardrobes, KALLAX shelving, MALM beds, BESTA media units, HEMNES dressers, BILLY bookcases, GALANT desks, and more.

A single IKEA PAX wardrobe can take an inexperienced assembler 3–4 hours. Our team handles it in under an hour per unit, correctly, with no bent brackets or uneven doors.

Wayfair, Amazon, and Other Online Retailers

The explosion of online furniture has created a massive variety of flat-pack products from dozens of manufacturers. Quality and instruction clarity varies enormously. Our team has seen it all and can work from any instruction set.

Big Box Stores

Furniture from JYSK, HomeSense, The Brick, Leon's, and Canadian Tire — we assemble it all.

What We Assemble

  • Bed frames and headboards (all sizes, including storage beds with hydraulic lift mechanisms)
  • Wardrobes and closet systems (including PAX and other modular configurations)
  • Dressers and nightstands
  • Desks and office furniture (standing desks, L-shaped desks, hutches)
  • Bookshelves and storage units
  • TV stands and media consoles
  • Dining tables and chairs
  • Children's furniture (cribs, bunk beds, loft beds, toy storage)
  • Outdoor furniture (garden sets, pergolas, storage sheds)

What Tools and Equipment Do We Bring?

Our assemblers arrive with a full professional toolkit:

  • Power drills and drivers (much faster than manual screwdrivers)
  • Allen key sets (metric and imperial, all sizes)
  • Rubber mallets (for joining pieces without damage)
  • Level (so your furniture is actually straight)
  • Measuring tape
  • Touch-up supplies for minor surface marks

We don't borrow your tools and we don't leave a mess. All packaging is disposed of or stacked neatly before we leave.

Common Assembly Mistakes (That We Prevent)

Over-tightening Hardware

The most common cause of stripped holes and cracked particle board. Power tools make this easy to do. Our assemblers know the right torque for each fastener type — firmly secure, not stripped.

Backwards Panels

Flat-pack panels often look identical from both sides until the finished product is assembled and you realize a pre-drilled hole is in the wrong place. Checking the instruction sequence before picking up any hardware prevents this entirely.

Skipping Steps

Tempting when an instruction set is 40 pages long. Almost always leads to disassembly and rework when a critical cam lock was missed on step 8.

Not Checking for Level

A bookshelf installed 2 degrees off level looks fine at first and aggravates you every time you look at it afterward. We check and adjust.

Ignoring Wall Mounting Requirements

Many wardrobes and tall bookshelves are designed to be anchored to the wall for safety — especially important in homes with children. We anchor appropriately and explain why.

How Long Does Assembly Take?

This varies by product:

  • Simple flat-pack pieces (nightstand, small shelf): 20–45 minutes
  • Bed frame (standard): 45–90 minutes
  • Large wardrobe (PAX 3-door): 60–90 minutes
  • Modular shelving system (e.g., KALLAX 4×4): 60–90 minutes
  • Standing desk with cable management: 60–90 minutes
  • Full bedroom set (bed, 2 nightstands, dresser): 3–4 hours

We'll give you a time estimate based on your specific items when you call.

When to Book Assembly Help

The most obvious time is after a move — but we provide assembly services independently of moving too. Common scenarios:

  • New furniture delivery — you ordered online, it arrived, and the assembly looks daunting
  • Moving into a new home — you want everything set up correctly from day one
  • Renovation or redecorating — reconfiguring rooms or replacing furniture
  • Gifts — children's birthday gifts (beds, playsets, desks) that require assembly
